Denice Pitt
CEO
UCMS
Number of years in role:  First year as CEO (8 years with UCMS)
Number of staff:  2,200
Industry:  Outsource service - contact centres

What do you do?
As the CEO of UCMS I am responsible for setting the vision, implementing the directives of the Board and overseeing the overall performance of the company. It’s also vital to balance the day to day objectives against the long term strategy of the business in the market. Most recently I have been working on the company’s Initial Public Offering, readying the business for float.

What results are expected in your position?
The Board and I set the strategy and establish the business plan. My role is to ensure the delivery of the objectives as outlined in the business plan and represent the interests of the company in the broader business arena.

What has been your biggest career highlight to date?
As part of the Optus launch team, I was lucky enough to be part of the foundation of what is now Australia's second largest carrier. At the time it meant being right at the coalface and changing the competitive landscape in our market.

What is the best and worst thing about your job?
Best thing is being able to work with my team to drive the change that is appropriate for our business. The worst part is managing the administrative burden that all jobs come with, something I am sure every manager can relate to!

Any tips on how to get and stay ahead?
Understand what you need to deliver, don't get distracted by others, maintain your focus and your confidence in your own ability.

How do you encourage loyalty with your staff and clients?

For clients and staff alike, it's about communication, understanding their views and making sure there is a balance in the relationship, which is fostered by mutual respect and honesty. With clients it's understanding what they need to get out of the relationship, what they need to achieve in the market, and delivering on your ability to help them achieve those goals.

What do you think employees want from their employer?
Employees want to know their employer has a sense of their ambitions and goals; that they are clear on where they want to go.  Employees also like to understand where they fit into the big picture and how their contribution makes a difference.  It also helps if the employer can provide clear direction on how to succeed in the role and give their employees the tools and directions that allow them to achieve success.  Most people like to have their passions identified and harnessed, so they can create a sense of value within their role.

What does your company do for its staff that you feel is different from what other companies provide?
Unlike many companies, UCMS sells time and talent, not products, so the development of that talent is absolutely part of our core business.  Like most organisations we have a number of initiatives that are designed to enhance this, such as our Hot Shots Future Leaders program; and we also have a division that really fosters the ability to work from home, providing the flexibility that is in such high demand in the workforce today.

What are the biggest human capital issues your industry is dealing with?  …and what should be done about them?
The skills drought is obviously an issue for every organisation, which really places the emphasis on ensuring the workplace is somewhere people want to be and are happy to remain.   This can be achieved when people can see they work for a company that is committed to providing them with choice, security and the ability to progress in their careers based on the merit of their performance and their desire to succeed.
